Let's Talk The Brits

The BRIT awards never cease to create a real buzz within the music industry, news outlets and social media and this year was no different. 2019 was the year that I actually decided to sit down and watch the whole awards on TV (except for the first 10 minutes because I was watching a rather gripping episode of Holby City on iPlayer 😉)

Overall, I really enjoyed it, one of my favourite bands; The 1975, won two awards and used the platform to stand up against misogyny within the industry, reading from Lauren Snape's 2015 essay:

Male misogynist acts are examined for nuance and defended as traits of ‘difficult’ artists, [while] women and those who call them out are treated as hysterics who don’t understand art.

Equally, Jess Glynne gave a vocally stunning yet provoking performance of 'Thursday.' Jess, and the women around her took off their make up as a visual message that we need to recognise how detrimental our society is to our body confidence and mental health.


However, these, and many more outcries against discrimination and mental health seemed somewhat overshadowed by Jack Whitehall's presenting. His initially funny commentary soon turned into downright sexualisation, of both Little Mix (immediately after Matt Healy's comment about misogyny?!) and then later of Shawn Mendes. I was disgusted, as were many of my fellow twitter users.

Even so, I did not let that ruin what was an excellent show, finished spectacularly by P!nk. Truly celebrating the beautiful talent of our music industry. I would love to hear what you thought♡
